The Le Shuttle motorhome tariff for 2026
Le Shuttle splits motorhome pricing into three length tiers. All prices sampled in May 2026 on leshuttle.com for single one-way journeys per vehicle for up to nine passengers. Prices move with dynamic pricing based on date and time, with the upper end of each band typically applying to Friday and Sunday departures in school holidays. The lower end applies to mid-week off-peak departures.
| Length tier | From | To | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 6.5m | £149 | £275 | Small panel-van conversions, T6 / T7, short-wheelbase Ducato, Romahome |
| 6.5m to 8m | £195 | £345 | Mid-size coach-built motorhomes (Bailey, Auto-Trail, most Hymer) |
| Over 8m | £225 | £421 | A-class motorhomes, large coach-built (Concorde, Niesmann+Bischoff) |
The vehicle must also fit within the carriage envelope: maximum height 4m, maximum width 2.55m. Almost all road-legal UK motorhomes meet these limits. The maximum length for an articulated combination (vehicle plus trailer) is 18m, which is well beyond the typical motorhome.
How length is measured (and the declaration trap)
Le Shuttle measures total external vehicle length from the foremost point of the front of the vehicle to the rearmost point of the back of the vehicle. This includes:
- Front bumper to rear bumper (the obvious)
- Bike rack and any bikes mounted on it
- Rear ladder, awning brackets, tow ball, spare wheel carrier
- Any ski boxes or storage at the front above the cab
When you book, you declare the length of your vehicle including everything mounted to it. Le Shuttle prices the booking based on your declaration. When you arrive at the Folkestone check-in lanes, vehicles classified as over-height (over 1.85m) are routed to a measurement lane with electronic gantries. If the measured length is greater than your declared length and crosses into a higher pricing tier, you pay the difference at the booth before being allowed to board. If you under-declare by 30 cm and it pushes you into the next tier, the upcharge can be £50 to £150 each way.
The most common cause of mis-declaration is bikes on a rear rack. A 6.4m motorhome with two bikes on the rack measures around 6.8m, which pushes you from the under-6.5m tier to the 6.5m-to-8m tier. Always declare the loaded length, not the bare-vehicle length. Le Shuttle is consistent about not charging for under-measurement (if you declared 6.8m but measured 6.4m, you do not get a refund), so accurate declaration saves money in one direction and protects against surprises in the other.
What happens on the train
Motorhomes are routed to single-deck specialist carriages, the same carriages used for very tall cars (over 1.85m) and HGV freight. The marshalling lanes at Folkestone for over-height vehicles are separate from the standard car lanes, with their own check-in booths and waiting area. Boarding happens roughly 30 minutes before scheduled departure. You drive into the carriage at one end, are guided into your designated spot by marshals, apply the handbrake and place the vehicle in gear (or park). You remain in or near your vehicle for the 35-minute crossing. Loo breaks are permitted (there are facilities at one end of each carriage), but movement between carriages is not allowed.
The single-deck carriages are spacious enough that motorhome interiors are accessible during the crossing. You can sit in the back, make a coffee on the gas hob (yes, gas cylinders are permitted on board), use the washroom. Mains hookup is not available; run off leisure battery or do without for 35 minutes. Mobile phone signal is patchy through the tunnel itself, fine at the terminals either side.
Gas cylinders and other restrictions
LPG cylinders are permitted on Le Shuttle, with restrictions. You can carry up to two cylinders per vehicle, each with a maximum capacity of 47kg (Calor 13kg or 47kg propane bottles, equivalent French Cepsa / Antargaz cylinders). Cylinders must be tightly sealed, valves closed, and not connected to appliances during the crossing. Refillable LPG systems (Gaslow, Safefill) are permitted but the supply must be isolated during transit.
Le Shuttle requires you to declare LPG carriage at the time of booking. You will not be charged extra, but the declaration ensures you are placed on a carriage with appropriate venting and you receive a green LPG sticker for the windscreen. Failure to declare can result in being turned away at boarding. Other hazardous materials (fireworks, large fuel canisters beyond a single petrol jerry can) are not permitted. See the Le Shuttle hazardous goods page for the current rules.
Le Shuttle motorhome vs ferry: the real comparison
For a motorhome trip into France, the alternative is one of the ferry routes. The Dover-Calais short crossing (P&O Ferries or DFDS, 90 minutes on water) is the direct competitor on the same route. Western Channel routes (Newhaven to Dieppe, Portsmouth to Caen / St Malo on Brittany Ferries, Plymouth to Roscoff) cost more in fare but save several hours of French driving for destinations in Normandy, Brittany or south-west France. The table below compares typical 2026 fares for a 7m motorhome in shoulder season.
| Route | Operator | Fare (one way) | Crossing time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Folkestone-Coquelles | Le Shuttle | £195-£345 | 35 min train |
| Dover-Calais | P&O / DFDS | £125-£250 | 90 min ferry |
| Newhaven-Dieppe | DFDS | £175-£295 | 4 hours ferry |
| Portsmouth-Caen | Brittany Ferries | £260-£420 | 5h 45m ferry (or overnight) |
| Portsmouth-St Malo | Brittany Ferries | £295-£475 | 10h 45m overnight ferry |
For destinations in Belgium, the Netherlands, or anywhere in France north of the Loire, Le Shuttle or Dover-Calais are usually the right choice. For destinations in Normandy, Brittany or the French Atlantic coast, the western ferry routes save several hours of motorway driving and the higher fare often nets out lower once tolls and fuel are included. Brittany Ferries publishes a fuel-and-toll calculator on its website that lets you compare the all-in cost for your specific destination.
Insurance, breakdown cover and the GB sticker
European driving insurance is included as standard on UK motorhome policies for trips up to 30 to 90 days per year, but check your policy specifics. Some policies require advance notification of European trips even when coverage is automatic. The EU Green Card requirement was abolished in August 2021, so you no longer need to carry a Green Card document on you.
European breakdown cover is essential. A motorhome breakdown in France without cover can cost £400 to £2,000 for a roadside callout plus recovery. Cover from the AA, the RAC, Caravan and Motorhome Club or Camping and Caravanning Club typically costs £60 to £200 for a fortnight depending on motorhome size and includes roadside repair, recovery to a garage, and onward travel costs if the vehicle is undriveable for more than 48 hours.
The UK number plate alone does not satisfy the EU vehicle identification requirement since 28 September 2021. You must display a UK sticker on the rear of the vehicle (not GB as previously). If your number plate includes a UK identifier (the new blue-and-white plate without the EU flag), a separate sticker is no longer required, but a separate UK sticker is still permitted and many motorhome owners use one anyway. Booking tactics for motorhome travellers
Motorhome travellers benefit disproportionately from off-peak booking. Because the single-deck carriages have fewer slots than the double-deck car carriages, peak-season Friday departures often sell out for motorhomes before they sell out for cars. Aim to book six to eight weeks ahead for summer departures, mid-week if at all possible.
The Day Trip and Overnight fare (£59 in a standard car) is not available for motorhomes. The lowest motorhome fare requires the Short Stay Saver tier, with a five-day return-by limit. For trips of more than five days, the Standard ticket gives an open return of up to 12 months for a slightly higher fare. FlexiPlus is rarely worth it for motorhome owners unless you need the flexibility of turning up any time on travel day (useful for ski-season weather delays or summer traffic congestion). The full UK pricing rationale is on the main vehicle costs page.
