  • 2.05mTypical car-plus-roof-box height (single-deck, small surcharge)

Vehicle-specific tips

Things that catch first-timers out

LPG vehicles

Must be declared at booking. No surcharge, but the gas system must be checked at the terminal. Allow extra time for the LPG check at the gate.

Hire cars

You need a Vehicle on Hire (VE103) certificate or your hire company’s permission to take the car abroad. Most UK hire companies charge £20 to £40 to issue this. Bring the original document, not a copy.

Roof boxes and bike racks

Measure when loaded. An empty roof box can be 10cm lower than a full one. If you scrape over 1.85m, you go single-deck and pay more.

Trailers and gas

Caravan gas tanks must be turned off and isolated. Declare combined length accurately. Spare tyre is fine but wheel chocks should be packed.

Electric and hybrid

No restriction, no surcharge. There is no charging during the crossing or at the terminals consistently. Plan to arrive with at least 50 km of range and charge in Calais.

Vehicles modified

Lifted 4x4s and modified vans must declare actual measured height, not the manufacturer spec. The marshals measure laser at the gate; you cannot fudge it.

Common questions

Vehicle pricing FAQ

Motorhome pricing depends on height and length. Vehicles under 1.85m height pay the standard car fare (£59 to £369 each way). Over 1.85m, motorhomes are routed to specialist over-height carriages and pay £149 to £421 each way. The price tier increases at 6.5m, 8m and over 8m total length. You must declare height and length accurately at booking; if the marshals measure your motorhome and it is over your declared dimensions, you pay the difference at the gate.
